Which alphabet printable should we start with?

Choose free alphabet PDFs by the task your child is ready for: find letters, match capitals and lowercase, make ABC crafts or practise uppercase A–Z.

Knowing a letter's name, spotting its shape and writing it are different tasks. Start with something your child can already do with a little help, then choose one next step. You do not need to print every pack or work through the alphabet in a single sitting.

These are activity choices, rather than a complete phonics programme or a test. Each pack has real page previews, a free A4 PDF and instructions. Check the individual page for suggested ages and the task's starting skills; readiness matters more than finishing a set by a particular birthday.

Start where your child is

What would you like to practise?

Find a familiar capital letter

Find the small copies of one letter and colour their squares to reveal a larger version. Start with a letter your child recognises, so the reveal adds interest without introducing too many new demands.

Match capitals with lowercase partners

Use the letter cards to pair uppercase and lowercase forms. Show a pair first, then offer a small choice of cards. Recognising a pair does not require writing it.

Make a letter with paper pieces

Make A for apple, B for butterfly and C for caterpillar. This is an ABC craft pack, not 26 letter crafts. A grown-up prepares the pieces; your child assembles and talks about the letter.

Practise capital letters and alphabet order

The 36-page pack has one focus page for each capital, then mixed reviews and a chart. Choose finding and tracing first; missing-letter rows and neighbours can wait until alphabet sequence is familiar.

Keep it manageable

A small practice session

  1. 1

Pick one letter and one task

Show the model and ask your child to find another example. If finding is the learning goal, let pointing or placing a card be the answer; a full page of writing is not required.

  2. 2

    Model before asking for recall

Name the letter and demonstrate the action once. For letter sounds, use the pronunciation and sequence taught by your child's teacher. Matching a letter's name is not the same as blending its sound into a word.

  3. 3

    Return with a small change

Next time, mix the familiar letter with one or two others, or try a different task with the same letter. Keep the chart available until it is no longer needed, and finish before the activity becomes frustrating.

Questions before choosing

Should we print the full A–Z pack?

No. Print a familiar letter's focus page or just the chart. The mixed pages are useful later, once several letters are comfortable. All PDFs remain available when you want another page.

What if my child recognises letters but avoids tracing?

Use the finding, matching or paper-making activities while you keep writing optional. A child can show recognition by pointing, sorting or placing a card. Follow the pack's easier option and offer a short writing attempt another time.

Which pack comes after letter recognition?

If your child knows relevant letter sounds and is beginning to blend, see the Early Reading guide. If not, continue with talk, familiar letters and the teaching approach used at school rather than moving to longer words just to make the worksheet harder.
