A good starting pointFor shared reading of simple sentences; a grown-up supports unfamiliar object and colour words. Age is a guide; choose tasks by readiness.
Reading a sentence should lead to understanding what it says. Here, the child uses a short sentence to decide how to colour an object, chooses a matching sentence and rebuilds its word order.
The repeated frame gives children a clear routine while the object and colour change. Shared reading is welcome: some words may still need adult support, and the picture and meaning tasks provide ways to take part before fully independent reading.

Try it together
How to use this activity
Read for a clear instruction
Read 'The bus is red' together. Point to the words in order, then ask which object and colour the sentence names.
Show the meaning
Colour the object as the sentence asks. Compare the alternative sentences and choose the one that matches the same message.
Build the word order
Place The + object + is + colour on the mat. Read across the whole sentence and notice the capital at the beginning and full stop at the end.
Write and change
Complete the missing word or writing task. On the open task, choose a new colour, make the picture agree and read the new sentence together.
Make it fit your child
A gentler start
Read aloud while your child chooses the correct colour. Use loose cards instead of asking them to copy the whole sentence.
Ready for another step?
Mix the cards for a familiar sentence and ask your child to rebuild it without the model, then read it back to check the meaning.

Printing and using the pages
Download the PDF, open it in a PDF viewer and choose A4 paper at 100% or “actual size”. Print only the pages you want to use. Check the preview before printing; keep colour cues visible when a selected task depends on them.
Regular paper works for the worksheets. For reusable loose cards, light card can be easier to handle if your printer supports it. Keep any cutout pieces at the printed scale so they fit their mat. A grown-up should handle preparation and cutting.
These original BundleBrain pages are free for personal and classroom use. Share a link to this activity page so other families can find the instructions and download their own copy. Please do not resell or re-upload the PDF.
