A good starting pointFor children ready to blend simple three-sound words, using familiar letter sounds. Age is a guide; choose tasks by readiness.
Changing one letter gives children a clear reason to read a word again. In this short-a pack, cat becomes hat and then mat; the ending stays put while the first sound changes.
The activity connects letter choice to the new spoken word. It is a small, focused starting point before a larger word-family pack: three families, a mixed review and a guide. Use the letter sounds while building, then read the complete word after every change.

How to use this activity
Read the model
Name the picture and blend the model word. For cat, point to c, a and t as you say the sounds, then read cat naturally.
Keep the ending
Show that –at remains in place. Name the next picture and listen for its first sound before choosing the new letter.
Change and read again
Write h or use the prepared card to make hat. Blend all three sounds again. Repeat with m to make mat, noticing what stayed the same.
Mix and check
Try another family when ready. Use the mixed page after the focus pages, then check the intended picture words with the guide.
Make it fit your child
A gentler start
Work with one chain and let your child move a prepared letter instead of writing. Model the first change before inviting them to try the next.
Ready for another step?
Cover the model while your child writes a trained word from dictation. Reveal it afterwards, check the letters and read the result together.

Printing and using the pages
Download the PDF, open it in a PDF viewer and choose A4 paper at 100% or “actual size”. Print only the pages you want to use. Check the preview before printing; keep colour cues visible when a selected task depends on them.
Regular paper works for the worksheets. For reusable loose cards, light card can be easier to handle if your printer supports it. Keep any cutout pieces at the printed scale so they fit their mat. A grown-up should handle preparation and cutting.
These original BundleBrain pages are free for personal and classroom use. Share a link to this activity page so other families can find the instructions and download their own copy. Please do not resell or re-upload the PDF.
