A good starting pointFor familiar letter sounds and early blending of three-sound, short-vowel words. Age is a guide; choose tasks by readiness.
Word families give children a consistent part to notice while still reading every sound. This pack introduces four words in each of five families: –at, –en, –it, –og and –ug.
The focus pages provide models; sorting, one-letter changes and listening dictation then mix the trained words. Use the later activities as review after shared reading, rather than asking your child to write unfamiliar words from the start.

How to use this activity
Blend one family
On the –at page, point to and sound out cat, hat, mat and rat. Read the whole word each time, keeping the vowel short.
Change the first letter
Replace c with h while keeping –at. Ask what changed, then blend the new word rather than guessing from the ending alone.
Mix the trained words
Try sorting words into their families or making the one-letter changes. Explain unfamiliar vocabulary, such as fog, in a short sentence.
Listen and write
For dictation, use the numbered answer list while the child writes on page 8. Say the word naturally, use it in a sentence if useful, then repeat it.
Make it fit your child
A gentler start
Work on two words from one family. Build with prepared cards and let the grown-up record the answer.
Ready for another step?
Read a trained word, cover it and spell it from sounds. Ask your child to read the written result back and compare with the model.

Printing and using the pages
Download the PDF, open it in a PDF viewer and choose A4 paper at 100% or “actual size”. Print only the pages you want to use. Check the preview before printing; keep colour cues visible when a selected task depends on them.
Regular paper works for the worksheets. For reusable loose cards, light card can be easier to handle if your printer supports it. Keep any cutout pieces at the printed scale so they fit their mat. A grown-up should handle preparation and cutting.
These original BundleBrain pages are free for personal and classroom use. Share a link to this activity page so other families can find the instructions and download their own copy. Please do not resell or re-upload the PDF.
Good to know
A couple of questions
Can the cards make other combinations?
They can, but not every combination is a real trained word. Use the reference chart to choose the intended words.
Which vowel families are included?
The pack uses –at, –en, –it, –og and –ug, giving short-vowel practice across a, e, i, o and u.
