A real peek inside your free PDF.

A good starting pointA grown-up reads the clues; children can point, copy or write their answers. Age is a guide; choose tasks by readiness.

Teddy is missing, and a little detective needs to discover where he went. Each clue asks your child to use a different kind of information: a symbol key, a dot pattern, a sequence of arrows or a picture pattern.

This is a pretend mystery with a reassuring ending, designed for shared thinking rather than independent reading. The pages form a short sequence, so read them in order and pause for your child's ideas before offering the next hint.

Try it together

How to use this activity

  1. Introduce the case

Read the opening together. Explain that this is a pretend puzzle and that the detective can use the clues to help Teddy.

  2. Decode and compare

Use the symbol key to write the letters of PARK. Then compare the dot patterns and copy the matching arrangement to identify the right bag.

  3. Follow the route

Read one arrow at a time. Move right, right, down, right and down, marking the route until it reaches the picnic location.

  4. Open the final clue

Complete the basket choices, then read the ending together. Puppy brought Teddy to a picnic in the park. Use a toy to retell the clues in order.

Make it fit your child

A gentler start

Cover the next clues until needed. Model the first symbol lookup and the first arrow movement, then let your child continue with support.

Ready for another step?

After the ending, ask which clue supplied the place, which identified the bag and how the arrows helped. Retell the evidence rather than guessing a new suspect.

Printing and using the pages

Download the PDF, open it in a PDF viewer and choose A4 paper at 100% or “actual size”. Print only the pages you want to use. Check the preview before printing; keep colour cues visible when a selected task depends on them.

Regular paper works for the worksheets. For reusable loose cards, light card can be easier to handle if your printer supports it. Keep any cutout pieces at the printed scale so they fit their mat. A grown-up should handle preparation and cutting.

These original BundleBrain pages are free for personal and classroom use. Share a link to this activity page so other families can find the instructions and download their own copy. Please do not resell or re-upload the PDF.

Good to know

A couple of questions

Is the story frightening?

The mystery is about a toy and ends with a picnic surprise. A grown-up can read it first and adapt the telling to their child.

Can it be printed in greyscale?

Colour helps with the final clue, but shape and word cues are also printed. Read those cues aloud if using greyscale.
