Pattern Train Practice
Find the small group that repeats, then build a train that keeps the same pattern.

A good starting pointStart with shape patterns. Read unfamiliar letter and number pieces together. Age is a guide; choose tasks by readiness.
Continuing a pattern is more than guessing the next picture. Naming the little repeating group helps children explain why a certain piece belongs next and check whether a train still follows its rule.
The pack begins with guided copying and continuing, then adds missing pieces, error spotting and creating a pattern. A reusable twelve-carriage train gives children space to try the same idea with movable cards.

How to use this activity
Say the repeating group
Point to the first complete group. For an AB shape pattern, say 'circle, square' together and repeat those names in the same order.
Copy and continue
Copy the given train before filling a gap or selecting the next piece. Check by reading the whole sequence aloud from its beginning.
Find the mistake
Use the first complete group as the rule. Look later in the row for the one piece that breaks it, then draw the correction.
Create a train
Choose a two- or three-piece group and repeat it on the mat. Read left to right on the first row and continue left to right on the next row.
Make it fit your child
A gentler start
Use two different shape cards and build an AB pattern together. Avoid letters and numbers until those symbols are familiar.
Ready for another step?
Invent a six-piece pattern from a two- or three-piece unit. Ask your child to identify the unit, explain the next piece and check it on the longer train.

Printing and using the pages
Download the PDF, open it in a PDF viewer and choose A4 paper at 100% or “actual size”. Print only the pages you want to use. Check the preview before printing; keep colour cues visible when a selected task depends on them.
Regular paper works for the worksheets. For reusable loose cards, light card can be easier to handle if your printer supports it. Keep any cutout pieces at the printed scale so they fit their mat. A grown-up should handle preparation and cutting.

Good to know
A couple of questions
Can this work in greyscale?
The shapes stay distinct without colour; colour is an extra clue. Check your chosen letter or number cards remain clear after printing.
Is there only one correct invented pattern?
No. Accept a consistent repetition of the chosen two- or three-piece unit. The guide explains how to check the open tasks.
