A good starting pointStart with circle, square and triangle. More shape names are optional extensions. Age is a guide; choose tasks by readiness.
A shape hunt becomes more useful when your child can also draw, match and describe the shape they found. Each page in Little Shape Detectives brings seven tasks together around one target outline.
The full pack contains familiar shapes and less familiar ones, so select pages by readiness. A preschooler can begin with circles, squares and triangles; a child who knows these can explore pentagons, hexagons or other outlines without repeating the entire pack.

Try it together
How to use this activity
Meet the target outline
Name the shape and trace its boundary with a finger. For a polygon, count the straight sides together. Look for something nearby with a similar outline.
Make the shape
Colour or trace the large model before trying a drawing. Your child can talk about corners or curved edges while working.
Search and count
Find the matching outlines in the busy group. Mark them one at a time, then count the marked shapes to avoid counting the same one twice.
Match and repeat
Choose the matching cutout cards if using them. On the pattern task, say the two-part sequence aloud before deciding what comes next.
Make it fit your child
A gentler start
Use the chart and one familiar shape. Skip cutting and writing; point to matches and count together.
Ready for another step?
Compare two outlines by their sides and corners. Ask your child to explain why a star has five outer points without calling it a five-sided polygon.

Printing and using the pages
Download the PDF, open it in a PDF viewer and choose A4 paper at 100% or “actual size”. Print only the pages you want to use. Check the preview before printing; keep colour cues visible when a selected task depends on them.
Regular paper works for the worksheets. For reusable loose cards, light card can be easier to handle if your printer supports it. Keep any cutout pieces at the printed scale so they fit their mat. A grown-up should handle preparation and cutting.

Good to know
A couple of questions
Should my three-year-old learn all twelve shapes?
There is no need. Begin with a few familiar shapes and keep the others as later extensions.
Can we use it without cutting?
Yes. Colour, trace, draw, find, count and pattern tasks work directly on the page; cut-and-match is optional.
