A good starting pointFor children who count within ten securely and are ready to split a group. Age is a guide; choose tasks by readiness.
A number bond describes one whole made from two parts. Moving counters makes the relationship visible: five counters can become two and three without changing how many there are altogether.
This pack introduces totals from 2 to 10 and lets children see several splits of each. A reusable mat supports the paper tasks, including missing parts and exchanging the two groups. Zero is included as a possible empty part.

How to use this activity
Count the whole first
Choose a total such as five. Count out exactly five counters before placing them on the mat.
Split without adding
Move two counters into one part and three into the other. Count each group and say that two and three make five.
Change the parts
Move a counter between the groups or swap the groups. Ask what changed and what stayed the same. Record a matching bond or addition sentence.
Find a missing part
Show the whole and one part. Use the counters to work out the other part. Move to mixed review when the focus-page examples feel familiar.
Make it fit your child
A gentler start
Begin with totals 2–5 and physical counters. Complete one split together before writing anything.
Ready for another step?
Keep the whole fixed and find several different splits. Ask your child to check a suggested bond and explain why it works or needs changing.

Printing and using the pages
Download the PDF, open it in a PDF viewer and choose A4 paper at 100% or “actual size”. Print only the pages you want to use. Check the preview before printing; keep colour cues visible when a selected task depends on them.
Regular paper works for the worksheets. For reusable loose cards, light card can be easier to handle if your printer supports it. Keep any cutout pieces at the printed scale so they fit their mat. A grown-up should handle preparation and cutting.
These original BundleBrain pages are free for personal and classroom use. Share a link to this activity page so other families can find the instructions and download their own copy. Please do not resell or re-upload the PDF.
Good to know
A couple of questions
Are focus-page titles giving away the whole?
Yes. These are guided practice pages. The mixed reviews change the totals and reduce that title clue.
Do the pieces need glue or a mechanism?
No. The counters move loosely between the mat's two parts and can be reset for each challenge.
